KUMISIÓN I FINO’ CHAMORU SEEKS CHAMORU LANGUAGE TEACHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN IMMERSION TRAINING PROGRAM FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Kumisión i Fino’ CHamoru yan i Fina’nå’guen i Historia yan i Lina’la’ i Taotao Tåno’ (Kumisión) is seeking CHamoru language teachers to join Cohort 3 of the ongoing “Nina’fitmen i Fina’nå’gue yan Ineyak i Fino’ CHamoru” program. The program is tailored for CHamoru language teachers or college and university students who aspire to become teachers of CHamoru language and culture and is fully funded by a grant from the Administration for Native Americans American Rescue Plan (ANA ARP). Participants will have the opportunity to receive Orthography Training and to enroll in the following four courses (one course per semester) at the Guam Community College (GCC):
- I. Immersion Method for CHamoru Language Teaching I;
- II. Best Practices for Literacy Instruction;
- III. CHamoru Composition; and
- IV. I Fina’nå’guen i Historia yan i Lina’la’ i Taotao Tåno’ (Teaching CHamoru History and Culture).
Each course aims to build enhanced teacher capacity to teach CHamoru as language arts using immersion techniques and is focused on place-based curriculum with standardized content for instruction in CHamoru language, history, and culture. Participants will earn three (3) college credits per course, and credits may be applied towards CHamoru Language & Culture Teacher/Educator Certification. The application period for Cohort 3 is now open and will be accepted through December 12, 2022, complete with all GCC enrollment and registration requirements. Space is limited to 15 participants per cohort. Approved applicants must commit to begin at the start of the GCC Spring 2023 semester. See attached application form below. The Kumisión i Fino’ CHamoru yan i Fina’nå’guen i Historia yan i Lina’la’ i Taotao Tåno’ (Commission on CHamoru Language and the Teaching of the History and Culture of the Indigenous People of Guam) is seeking proposals from researchers, content editors, and graphic artists to develop entries and create illustrations for a CHamoru cultural dictionary, Ginen i Matan i Mañaina-ta: Rinikohen yan Sinangan Siha. This project, supported by a Humanities Guåhan grant, provides an in-depth critical analysis of CHamoru words and sayings.
