Our Philosophy
The perpetuation of Fino’ CHamoru and our way of life lies at the heart of the Kumisión’s primary mission. We believe that CHamoru, the indigenous language of the Taotao Tåno’, must be learned, used, and transmitted to future generations. Further, the CHamoru language, cultural values, traditions, and history can be preserved and taught through initiatives that build and sustain a CHamoru literacy infrastructure in partnerships with government, educational institutions, and organizations dedicated to this mission. As the lead agency for developing, supporting, and leading CHamoru initiatives and interventions, we act to ensure that CHamoru is learned and spoken intergenerationally and that young speakers are developed for the future survivability of our indigenous language and culture. We actively engage in meeting this challenge by documenting, creating and making available language learning tools and other resources that promote the legacy of our ancestors in social media platforms and through our products and projects.
